How Long It Takes Concrete to Dry
Whether you’re making a new driveway, or having a concrete sidewalk installation done, your first question will always be, how long does concrete take to dry? Before you take another step, you need to know everything about drying and curing times to make sure that you don’t walk on it before it is ready.
Concrete Drying Timeline
Concrete takes anywhere between 24 – 48 hours to dry enough to walk on and at least a week until you can drive on it, however, typically, it takes up to 28 days to fully cure. Drying allows the concrete to reach its maximum strength so that it can support weight, so you don’t have to wait weeks, however, the extra time for curing is what will help the concrete reach its total strength.
How Long Does Cement Take to Dry?
It takes cement between 24 – 48 hours to dry enough to walk on it, and up to one week to drive on. Cement and concrete will take the same time to dry. Cement is actually an ingredient of concrete, and concrete contains aggregate, such as sand and crushed stones, in addition to cement, that you will need to add water to. Without cement, there will be no concrete.
What Is Curing?
This is giving concrete time to reach its full strength. Let’s explore the differences between concrete drying and curing below:
-
Drying: This allows concrete to reach a moisture level that is capable of supporting the material’s intended use, be it walking or driving.
-
Curing: This gives the crystals in the concrete time to grow around the pieces of sand, stone, and gravel in the mixture to increase its strength and durability. This process makes concrete stronger and watertight.
